The Uxbridge Community Concert Band

2024 Repertoire

Music about Adventure and Journeys Far from Home.

Lord of the Rings
Symphony

Johann de Meij wrote an epic symphony for concert band in 1988, well before the major movies.

Each of the five movements depicts a character (Gandalf, Gollum) or place (Lothlorien, Mines of Moria) from the books.

This was the band's selection of a piece from 2014 that they wished to revist.

Sailing!

This is a lively trip out on the open water, with a brief moment of calm before the wind picks up again.

Odysseus & the Sirens

Not all sailing trips are as easy going as our previous one!  From the stories of ancient Greece comes the tale of Odysseus who must sail his ship close to the alluring sounds of the Sirens, and risk shipwreck!

Also - a rehearsal with composer Dana Wilson and the group that premiered the piece.

Start at about 2:09 for best audio.

To a Distant Place

A couple of beautiful melodies, moments for solos, and opportunities to feature the woodwinds and brass separately.

Epic Gaming Themes

Our experiences with adventure stories aren't limited to movies or books -- we can play them too!

And video games feature cinematic music to support their storytelling.  In performance, we will NOT be playing the final section "Baba Yetu" from this arrangement.

Baba Yetu

It started as music for the game Civilization, and then became a stand-alone hit...and then part of composer Christopher Tin's amazing suite "Calling All Dawns".  A lyric video of the full orchestral/choral version is included.

Galop

No great adventure is complete without a chase scene, so here's ours!

The Big Picture

We're back in the theatre, taking in some of the great epics of cinema -- "Lawrence of Arabia", "Dances With Wolves", "Doctor Zhivago"...

Game of Thrones

The novels opened a whole new world of medieval conspiracy and conniving... and the television series became important viewing for many!

Game of T-bones

We can't forget about our great adventurers in the back row...

How to Train Your Dragon

What would an adventure story be without a DRAGON?  Here's the classic story of Hiccup and Toothless.

Homeward

From Mordor to Ithaca, to Arabia and Westeros,

and now it's time to come back home...

To Horizons Unseen

But who can stay home for long when there are so many great adventures out there to experience??
