I'm a high school music teacher who is very interested in composition, and getting students involved with the creation of original pieces.  It's puzzling to me that of all the Arts, Music is one place where it's rare to hear or see student-created work.

Visual Arts students draw their own pictures, Creative Writing and Drama students write their own stories and scripts, and Dance students choreograph their own motions.

But in Music, we almost always play someone else's music.  That's because writing music that sounds "correct" can require an understanding of harmony and counterpoint -- but not always.

When I work with a school group, we brainstorm ideas and concepts, and students provide the basic building blocks.  I can use my experience and knowledge to write the final composition.

The end result is an original composition that has been informed and inspired by ideas generated by the students.  And if the final composition is interesting enough, I share it so the musical ideas can be interpreted and performed by others.

Because these are shared creations, I do not wish to profit from them.  These would be different artistic statements if they were made with different schools and ensembles.
